Zubin Mehta celebrates his 85th birthday at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino

For his 85th birthday, maestro Zubin Mehta chose Florence and its Teatro del Maggio once again.

A symphony has been playing for over fifty years between the maestro and Florence.
Honorary citizen of the city, the Indian orchestra conductor Zubin Mehta has once again chosen Florence to celebrate his 85th birthday, and returns in-person to his Florentine home: the Teatro del Maggio.
 
On May 19, a few days after his birthday, he gifted Florence by conducting a special performance of Puccini’s Tosca in a concert that marked the true return of the heart of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the prestigious festival that has filled the theaters of Florence with European and global musical excellence since 1933, and from which the current theater takes its name.

The world-famous and award-winning maestro is in fact honorary director for life of the festival since 2006, and principal conductor since 1985. The relationship between Florence and the Maggio has always been much more than a relationship between festival and artist; Zubin Mehta has given the city his excellence, his tireless passion for music, and his presence, thus establishing a deeply special relationship with our music scene, which began with La Traviata at the Teatro Comunale in 1964, his first opera in Europe.

He was also part of the programme in 2020, with a performance in the auditorium of the theater in honor of the victims of the pandemic. Zubin Mehta returns in 2021 to conduct the orchestra with several dates confirmed until the end of June.
