You will be spoilt for choice at the Mercato Centrale, Florence’s main food market in the San Lorenzo neighbourhood. The iron and glass building was designed according to the Paris Les Halles model during the city’s years of urban restructuring in the late 19th century. Since then it has been a large market with a wide variety of stalls.
The first floor converted into a feast for the senses with stands occupied by food artisans who make meals on the spot before your hungry eyes, as well as selling their top-quality produce for you to take away. The ground floor has preserved its original identity – check out the butchers and fishmongers, greengrocers and other speciality stores selling Tuscan olive oil, wine and cheeses.
