EVENT DESCRIPTION:
From 26 September 2025 to 25 January 2026 the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation and the San Marco Museum present Angelico, an extraordinary exhibition dedicated to Fra Giovanni da Fiesole known as Beato Angelico, an artist who is a symbol of fifteenth-century art in Florence.
The exhibition, co-organised with the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Tuscany of the Ministry of Culture, celebrates one of the fathers of Renaissance art in Florence in an itinerary which, between the two locations of Palazzo Strozzi and the Museum of San Marco, will address the production, development and influence of Beato Angelico's art in dialogue with painters such as Masaccio, Filippo Lippi, Lorenzo Monaco, but also sculptors such as Lorenzo Ghiberti, Michelozzo and Luca della Madder.
The occasion of the exhibition will allow us to restore exceptional masterpieces and bring together for the first time works by one of the main masters of Italian art of all time, missing for over two hundred years. The exhibition will in fact propose an unrepeatable journey, with loans from the most important museums and institutions in the world, such as the Louvre in Paris, the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the National Gallery in Washington, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna , the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Famous for an artistic language which, starting from the Gothic heritage, uses the principles of nascent Renaissance art, Beato Angelico (circa 1395 – 1455) created works famous for their mastery of perspective and the use of light in the relationship between figuration and space. The exhibition will allow us to explore the absolute quality of this artist like never before, bringing out the capacity for artistic innovation in relation to a profound religious sense, based on a meditation on the sacred in connection with the human.
Curated by Carl Brandon Strehlke, Angelico represents the first major exhibition in Florence dedicated to the artist after over seventy years, creating a unique dialogue between institutions and territory in the collaboration between the Palazzo Strozzi Foundation, the Regional Directorate of National Museums of Tuscany and the Museum of San Marco, whose section will be co-curated by Stefano Casciu (Regional Director of National Museums of Tuscany – MiC) and Angelo Tartuferi (former Director of the Museum of San Marco).
On the cover: Beato Angelico, Last Judgment (det.), circa 1425-1428, Florence, San Marco Museum.
